Interesting, isn’t it? How a title can captivate you enough to read additional sentences from an internet Blog, or article?
Although the debate of whether or not Luke Skywalker listens to Dubstep is not the focus of our article, the main goal of the title is. How do you capture the attention of the vast sea of fans just waiting to hear your music? If you are still reading this article, then you have already learned todays first tip! Whether it be through kittens or Star Wars, we must find creative ways to market our work (and in our case, our music). Today we will learn a few ways to help grow an audience of truly appreciative fans.
Marketing is something that is easily cast aside by musicians, who often are of the mindset of “I would rather make music…” or “I’ll leave that to someone else”. This is all well and good, however who will be willing to listen to your music and your message if you yourself don’t understand how to deliver it? There is a reason that giant corporations like Pepsi and McDonalds will spend THOUSANDS just to find out that the main consumer of what they are selling is female and single.

When your audience is clear, you know how to effectively tailor your message to maximize potential listeners. The way any product is marketed would be extremely different depending on whether most potential buyers are males or females. This may seem like common sense, yet so many musicians actually don’t know whether the vast majority of their audience is male or female, single or married.
How To Market Your Music
If you are one of those musicians, don’t fret! I am here to bring you good news. There is a way to discover your target demographics (age, marital status, etc.) without spending thousands, or even hundreds. Through modern technology, we as musicians now have the power of Facebook marketing. Facebook provides an extremely detailed snapshot of your audience, and eliminates the upfront cost of hiring a huge marketing firm to spread the word about your music.

For example, if you have a Facebook fan page, try posting something directly targeted towards females. This can be selected under the targeted demographics option in your post. Then on the next day, at the same time of day, post the same exact content at the same time targeted towards males. Which has a better result? Is it consistent with what you had previously thought?
Although two days of posts are not nearly enough to fully grasp your content marketing strategy, it will give you a huge running start in the correct direction. Understanding your audience is the key to finding people who want to hear your music. Then, you can spend time making it instead of trying to persuade the wrong people to listen.
Today, I leave you with a challenge: Truly try and assess your own marketing, and see if you can tailor your approach to what you know about your audience. The results may shock and enlighten you. If you feel up to it, post your results below, as I would love to hear about your success. Happy Marketing!
