In this tutorial on mixing bass, I demonstrate how you can use different filters in parallel to create movement in your basses, while also retaining the overall largeness of you bass (without cutting too much out from the sound).

The tutorial also covers a technique revealed by Skope in the podcast session we did, where he explains how he uses the modulation in Sugarbytes WOW to automate both the cut off of a band pass filter and also the dry wet.

By using this technique, you can modulate the filter so that the higher range of the frequency spectrum can be heard when the band pass filter frequency moves down towards lower frequencies. This allows you to retain your high end in your bass.

The video is no longer viewable.

Another thing demonstrated in this tutorial is the use of compression or distortion (examples of additive processing) after a subtractive process such as a notch filter, to tighten up your bass and add back in new harmonics to replace some of what has been lost by using a notch/band reject filter.

These are simple but powerful techniques, and if you train your ear you can get some very interesting results.

One thing to be aware of when using this kind of technique is that you may have phase cancellation issues, so it is always a good idea to check your phase inversions.

This is one of 52 videos on mixing bass music from our Ultimate Mixdown Guide. I’m sure you’ll accelerate your mixdown learning curve and boost your skills by 20, 40, even 60% by watching this course. Many of the techniques I show in the course are proven tips that are used by top producers such as Skope, MakO, Kursa and others I have interviewed on the podcast.
